My latest assignment was to create a DVD cover for a movie done by film students in the CAS college. I chose “White Rabbit” because the whole thing sounded ridiculous and a lot of fun to work with. It’s about a guy who gets kicked off of the police force because he can’t grow a moustache and seeks revenge. It’s reminiscent of an 80s cop drama, so I wanted to play up the moustaches and cut off shorts, or “jorts” as they’re known to some. I won’t be heartbroken if my design isn’t chosen in the end, because it was a fun project and a good portfolio piece! Next up: a snowboard design to commemorate the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.. Can’t wait!

I discover new artists every day. Artists like Andrew Kuo, who documents his emotional & personal life through infographic-esque charts. Charts like the one below; he does a whole series of charting music for the ArtBeats blog on the New York Times site. I’m in love with the idea, and his execution is brilliant.

Here’s an update on the current status of my life:

I’m averaging 3-4 hours of sleep every night – two jobs and (only) 14 credits certainly keeps me busy. After last weekend’s shenanigans in Chicago *INSERT SEEING WILCO LIVE HERE* I was not ready for this week. Now that it’s FINALLY fall (which means scarves, sweaters, and boots galore), all I want to do is bake pumpkin bread, drink cocoa, and watch re-runs of Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother wrapped up in my bed. Instead, I’m doing this:

I start my internship at the art museum tomorrow and I’m a bit nervous – I have that “night before the first day of school so I can’t sleep out of excitement” thing going on. So, I decided to practice making swirly whirly type things in Illustrator and came up with this. The words are from the song “Rolled Together” by The Antlers, off of the album Burst Apart (they’re currently the only band in my life right now – check them out, they’ll change your life.)

Here’s the final version of the logo I designed for my step-brother’s new company. He said I almost exactly captured what he’d pictured and that he loves it – hope he was telling the truth!

So, I’ve been wanting a drawing tablet for a while now, and tonight while I was working on a Lynda.com tutorial, the instructor was using a tablet and doing some pretty amazing things. Needless to say, I did some research on which one would be best for me, drove to Best Buy, did a little bargaining with the worker, and now I have a Wacom Bamboo Create tablet. It’s such a fun little toy and I’m probably going to be up all night playing with it. I don’t know what was more exciting, though – actually getting the tablet and using it, or simply opening it up. The packaging was incredible, and reminded me of when I opened up my first Apple product (I think it was a first generation iPod shuffle…)
